Motivation is great. It gets you in the mood to get shit done. But motivation is also unreliable. It’s fleeting. So how do we hold into it?
I have never met anyone who is motivated 100% of the time. We all deserve those days off to curl up in a fetal position and let the existential dread set in… because you’re worth it. But that’s where discipline comes in. Here’s what helps me to delay gratification and punch procrastination in the face:
Not everyone’s brain works this way, I know, but I don’t know where I’d be without lists. I’ll often find myself making sub-lists of lists, and sub-sub-lists of sub-lists until… list-ception. But the satisfaction of ticking off all of those “to-do’s” just sends tingles down my spine.
I highly recommend this. When I write something down it gets etched into my brain. Plus, handwriting is a lost art. Remember taking handwriting classes in primary school? Nostalgic or what? There’s nothing better than putting pen to paper. I’ve also just gotten into Bullet Journaling! It’s something I look forward to and it’s a chance to get creative.
Make a Timetable
Almost like a study timetable or a lesson plan. Just so you have a schedule to stick to. Or if that’s a bit too intense – have daily, weekly and monthly goals. Write them down and keep checking back with them to make sure you’re on the right track.
Keep a Diary or Calendar
Not only will this help you remember what you need to do and where you need to be, but it’s also a great way to look back on and see everything that you’ve already achieved. You probably get a lot more done in a month than you realize, so it’s good to see it all laid out in front of you. What great motivation to keep going!
Make Your Bed in the Morning
This is a biggie and surprisingly enough it’s very effective. If you make your bed first thing in the morning, that’s one task completed. This will get you rolling and will motivate you to complete other tasks. If, by chance, you have a bad day, you will have a nicely made bed to look forward to.
Get Up Early
I struggle with this, but the fact of the matter is that the early bird really does get the worm. As long as you’ve had a good nights sleep, getting up early makes you feel like the day is your bitch. So many hours to do all of the things!
Plan Your Own Rewards
You gotta do you. You just gotta treat yo’self. Because if you can’t love yourself then how the hell you gonna love somebody else, can I get an amen? Sorry. But seriously. Have a chocolate waiting for you for when you’ve caught up on all of those emails. Plan your weekend so you can look forward to it. Delay buying that dress until after you’ve achieved a certain goal. Ya get me?
So there you have it. Just a few strategies I’ve found helpful. I’m always on the lookout for more. What have you done in the past that’s kept you motivated? Let me know!
